Pentimenti is thrilled to return to the highly anticipated EXPO CHICAGO at Navy Pier’s Festival Hall with a solo presentation of Jacob Feige in the PROFILE section at Booth 130. EXPO CHICAGO brings together over 170 of the world’s leading galleries, offering a dynamic platform for contemporary and modern art.
Jacob Feige’s artwork includes both traditional paintings and double-sided, free-standing paintings that explore the tension between anonymity and individuality in the 21st century, reinterpreting the notion of lost identity in an era shaped by technology. Drawing from Byzantine icons and modernist figurative paintings, Feige constructs each portrait with geometric elements, creating figures that feel both familiar and uncanny, echoing the complexities of identity in contemporary society.
"Vermilion Monuments" is a series of double-sided, free-standing paintings. One side of each work begins with vermilion red, a reference to the story collections of Vermilion Sands. On this surface, anonymous portraits transform into sculptural forms within a landscape, held up by scaffolding—suggesting both construction and fragility. The reverse side presents a schematic face with dual profiles, featuring precise cut-outs that reveal an underlying layer, adding depth and dimensional interplay.
Portions of the portraits in both painting series are created using acrylic casts from intricately carved plaster. These fragments are deliberately taken from cutouts, creating a sense of fragmentation and then mounted onto the painting surface. Feige’s use of synthetic colors, starkly contrasting with soft tones, heightens the disconnect between humanity and its environment. These works blur the boundaries between sculpture and painting, merging materiality with abstraction.
JACOB FEIGE received a BHA (Bachelor of Humanities and Art) from Carnegie Mellon University and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2005. His work has been exhibited at Stockton University Art Gallery, Galloway, NJ; Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA; RISD, Providence, RI; Orlando Museum of Art, Orlando, FL; among other venues. In 2024, he was an artist-in-residence at Alfred University Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf, Germany, and in 2018 at the Princeton Cyprus Expedition, Polis Chrysochous, Cyprus. He was awarded a New Jersey Council on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship in 2022. His work has been featured in Artforum, Frieze, The New Yorker, Art in America, and Title Magazine, among others.
