LA VAUGHN BELLE

Belle’s meticulous work examines archives, architecture, oral histories, myths, and material culture from the colonial period to today. She brings to light the past of the U.S. Virgin Islands, a place that has changed colonial hands seven times—the longest being Denmark and the last being the United States. Her work explores a narrative that intertwines personal and global histories, crafting new stories that affirm the principles of freedom and self-determination.

La Vaughn Belle received her BA and MA from Columbia University, New York, NY. She received her MFA from the Instituto Superior de Arte, Havana, Cuba. She has exhibited her work in museums and institutions such as the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA; Museo del Barrio New York, NY; Casa de las Americas Havana, Cuba; the Museum of the African Diaspora San Francisco, CA; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, Denmark; and more. Her art is in the collections of the National Photography Museum Copenhagen, Denmark; Vestsjælland Museum, Denmark; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Weltkulturen Museum, Frankfurt, Germany; the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Richmond, VA. By embracing the rich histories of his findings, Ted Larsen’s sculptures draw you in with warm to neutral tone colors and leave you appreciating the untarnished and weathered surface of the salvaged steel. He divides his work into geometric units that are then rearranged and combined to create a myriad of different landscapes.
