My paintings register the pressures and pleasures of our unrelenting, built environment. The pieces of the Urban Compression series echo my frequent experiences navigating the exurban landscape. This is a space of seemingly endless extension with very few prominent points of orientation or focus. Thus, I strive with each painting to attain a precarious balance between organized pattern and randomness and between spatial depth and compression. Similar to my travels in exurbia, the surfaces of these paintings present any number of possible itineraries in and amongst the fields of cubic forms.
Steven Baris graduated from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia (MFA) and The Evergreen State College, Olympia (BA). He exhibited locally at the Galleries at Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art; in Canada at Michael Gibson Gallery and in Switzerland at Art Forum Ute Barth, Zurich, and more.
