SARAH PATER’s paintings explore the subtle value of time, the aesthetics of domestic and work environments, daily experience, and the in-between spaces of contemporary life, where boredom and attention often blur. Her works unfold slowly—both in their making and in their viewing—guided by self-imposed systems that sustain a meditation on stillness, attention, and perception itself.

Through recurring motifs such as windows and desks, Pater creates visual spaces in which elements hover in suspension, allowing meaning to emerge gradually through careful, repeated observation. Her paintings function as analogues for contemporary modes of looking—fragmented, ambient, and layered—while remaining intimate in scale, inviting a quiet, contemplative engagement.

SARAH PATER received her BFA from Boston University and her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has exhibited widely, including at the Berman Museum of Art, Collegeville, PA; Pablo’s Birthday, New York, NY; CHART, New York, NY; Helen J Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Taymour Grahne Projects, London, UK; West Chester University, West Chester, PA; 808 Gallery at Boston University, Boston, MA, and the RISD Museum, Providence, RI.

Pater has been awarded numerous artist residencies, including the Lighthouse Works, Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency, Soaring Gardens Artist Residency (Ora Lerman Charitable Trust), and The Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts Residency, among others.

Her work has been featured in publications including Whitehot Magazine, Two Coats of Paint, Wall Street Journal, Hyperallergic, New American Paintings, and more.
